You may already have creditable prescription coverage
Some Medicare beneficiaries do not need a separate drug plan because they have qualifying prescription coverage through an employer or union, VA health benefits, TRICARE, CHAMPVA, or another source. Do not cancel existing coverage until you understand how it coordinates with Medicare. Ask the plan administrator whether the coverage is considered creditable coverage and keep the annual notice for your records.
Frequently asked questions
Important information to review before choosing Medicare drug coverage.
What is a stand-alone Medicare Part D plan?
A stand-alone Part D plan is prescription drug coverage offered by a private insurance company approved by Medicare. It is commonly paired with Original Medicare and may also be used with a Medicare Supplement policy.
How is Medicare Advantage different?
Medicare Advantage is an alternative to Original Medicare offered by a Medicare-approved private insurer. These plans provide Part A and Part B benefits and many include Part D drug coverage. Plan networks, service areas, referrals, prior authorization, and cost sharing can vary.
Do I need Part D if I have employer coverage?
Not necessarily. Ask the employer or union plan whether its prescription coverage is creditable. Creditable means it is expected to pay, on average, at least as much as standard Medicare drug coverage. Keep written proof of that status.
What about VA, TRICARE, or CHAMPVA drug coverage?
These programs may provide prescription benefits that affect whether a separate Part D plan is necessary. Before enrolling or dropping coverage, review the program’s coordination rules and speak with the appropriate benefits administrator.
Could I owe a Part D late-enrollment penalty?
A penalty may apply when a person goes without Medicare drug coverage or other creditable prescription coverage for a qualifying period and later enrolls in Part D. Eligibility and penalty calculations depend on the individual’s coverage history.
